Philosophy
Named after a man who refused to guess.
Archimedes could have estimated. Everyone around him did. Instead he built a method that proved the answer and showed anyone who asked exactly how he got there. Twenty two centuries later that is still the harder thing to do, and it is the whole point of Archie.
The measurement
He measured a curve by trapping it.
Nobody could measure a circle. So he drew a polygon inside it and a polygon outside it, and kept adding sides.
The circle had to be larger than the one and smaller than the other. Add enough sides and the two close in until the answer is trapped between them.
What matters is not that he got a number. It is that he got a number with known limits, arrived at by a method anyone could check. He did not ask to be believed.
That distinction is the entire difference between a tool that answers and a tool you can rely on.
What it means here
Every number Archie produces carries the document and the clause it came from. Not a citation added afterwards to look rigorous. The trail is how the number was arrived at, so it can be followed backwards by anyone who wants to.
And where it cannot compute something, it says so. An honest gap is worth more than a confident guess, because a gap costs you an hour and a wrong number can cost you a test, a handover, or a defect that shows up years later.
The fixed point
Give me a place to stand and I will move the earth.
The famous line is usually quoted as a boast about leverage. It is actually a statement about dependency. The lever is useless without a fixed point to push against.
The standard is the fixed point
Values are worked from a versioned library where every constant is verified against its source clause, not paraphrased from memory.
The engine computes
The arithmetic is deterministic. The model reports what the engine computed and cites where it came from. It does not invent the number.
The engineer rules
A commissioning engineer grades the output. Corrections become permanent tests, so judgement compounds instead of drifting.
Still installed
His screw is still in buildings.
The Archimedes screw lifts water by turning a helix inside a cylinder. It is over two thousand years old and it is still specified, still installed, still commissioned. Walk enough plant rooms and you will meet one.
Very little survives that long. What does tends to share a quality: it was understood completely before it was built, so there was nothing in it to fail unpredictably.
That is the bar. Not software that impresses in a demo, but software an engineer is willing to put their name against, because they can see exactly what it did and why.
The standard we hold
Show the working, or say you cannot.
There is no third option. A number without a trail is an opinion, and an opinion is not something you can hand to a client, a certifier, or a court.
See a number traced back to its clause.
Bring a real project. We will follow one figure all the way from the deliverable to the sheet and the standard it came from.
